How the calculation works
A person with 20/20 vision resolves detail down to about one arcminute — a sixtieth of a degree. Convert that to screens: at around 60 pixels per degreeyour eye stops picking out individual pixels entirely. But that "retina" bar is not where the practical line sits. Calibrated against real desk setups: 45–60reads as clean all-day text (a 27-inch QHD at 60 cm sits here), 35–45is usable with faintly visible pixel structure (24-inch FHD territory), and below~35 text turns visibly coarse — which is exactly where a 27-inch FHD panel lands at arm's length, and why its reviews say what they say.
Pixels per degree depends on two things: the panel's pixel density (PPI) and how far away you sit. That's the whole calculator: PPI = √(width² + height²) ÷ diagonal, then PPD ≈ distance × PPI × π/180.
The practical use is buying, not sitting: before you pay for a monitor, check whether its sharp-distance range overlaps the 50–75 cm band where desk ergonomics wants you anyway. A 27-inch Full HD panel only turns sharp around 75 cm — the far edge of that band — which is whyverified Indian buyers report fuzzy text on 27-inch FHD monitors and why the guide recommends 24-inch FHD or 27-inch QHD instead.
Questions people ask
What is the ideal viewing distance for a 24-inch monitor?
For desk work, 50–75 cm (roughly arm's length) is the comfortable ergonomic band. Across that band a 24-inch Full HD panel delivers about 32–47 pixels per degree — the "usable to good" range. Nobody honest calls it blurry and nobody honest calls it retina; it is the standard, perfectly workable budget experience.
What about a 27-inch monitor?
Depends entirely on resolution, and this is where the numbers bite. At a typical 60 cm, a 27-inch QHD (2560×1440) panel delivers about 45 pixels per degree — clean text for all-day work. A 27-inch Full HD panel delivers about 34 — into the coarse zone where verified buyers report fuzzy text. Same size, same distance, entirely different reading experience.
What do PPI and pixels-per-degree mean?
PPI (pixels per inch) is a property of the panel: resolution divided by physical size. Pixels per degree describes what your eye actually receives at a given distance — the same panel delivers more pixels per degree the further back you sit. Around 60 pixels per degree, a person with 20/20 vision stops resolving individual pixels; most good desk setups actually live in the 40–55 range and read fine.
Does this apply to vertical (portrait) monitors?
Yes — PPI and pixels-per-degree are orientation-independent. Portrait mode makes sharpness matter more in practice, because a rotated monitor is usually dedicated to reading tall columns of text or code.
